Melasma- general tips

Avoid going outdoors 10 am- 4 pm, the peak time for UV rays. If you have to go outside, use physical protection like an umbrella/hat/mask/dupatta to cover your face. Apply sunscreen 2-3 times/day even if not going outside.  If going outside, apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going outdoors.  Make sure to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.   Use the prescribed depigmenting creams for the recommended duration under dermatologist follow-up. Prolonged use without supervision may result in side effects and damage to the skin. Your doctor may also recommend chemical peeling and lasers depending on the response to depigmenting creams and the type of melasma.
