Melasma- general tips

  • Avoid going outdoors 10 am- 4 pm, the peak time for UV rays. If you have to go outside, use physical protection like an umbrella/hat/mask/dupatta to cover your face.
  • Apply sunscreen 2-3 times/day even if not going outside.  If going outside, apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going outdoors.  Make sure to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
  • Use the prescribed depigmenting creams for the recommended duration under dermatologist follow-up. Prolonged use without supervision may result in side effects and damage to the skin.
  • Your doctor may also recommend chemical peeling and lasers depending on the response to depigmenting creams and the type of melasma.
